If you’ve been in the yoga scene for a while, you may have heard of chakras. But what exactly are they and why should you care?
The word “chakra” means wheel in sanskrit. These “wheels” are energy vortexes responsible for how you interact with the world around you. In the physical body, they are represented by clusters of nerves and sensitive organs.
These nerves receive and transmit data and their dysfunction can lead to a lower quality of life, or even sickness and disease.
The Sacral Chakra
The Sacral chakra houses the sexual organs and is correlated with the lymphatic system, and kidneys, and is located about two inches below the belly button.
It is the center of creativity and feeling and has a big impact on how you relate to the people and environment around you.
An improperly functioning sacral chakra, or svadhisthana, can show itself in a variety of ways.
Symptoms of an unhealthy svadhisthana:
- Apathetic regard for the world at large
- Codependent relationships
- Struggle to find partners or a bouncing from one relationship to the next
- Creativity blockage
- Overindulgence in visceral pleasures
- Overly emotional and or compulsive in behavior
- Poor boundaries
If you’re moody or depressed–if you have an overly voracious sexual appetite or conversely are sexually impotent, you may have a problem with this chakra.
And it’s absolutely understandable. In today’s culture, it seems that we’re bombarded with images of physical catastrophe and reasons to be scared (via the news), or sex, relationships, and status (via advertising and television programming).
Well luckily there are some ways to heal this chakra and free your energy up to get it moving again.
Spend time being creative
All those creative hobbies you wish you had time for, start making time for them. Take that painting and wine class you and your girlfriends always talk about. If you’ve always wanted to learn guitar, there’s no time like the present. Your creative endeavors will get you relating to the world in a healthy and healing way.
Stop looking outside for someone to fulfil you
“Happiness is an inside job.” Realizing that you’re responsible for your own good emotions is the key to freeing yourself from the constant search of the perfect partner. When you can truly love yourself is when you’ll find the person that reflects that back to you.
Practice abstinence or conversely honest and authentic sexual expression
If you’ve had a particularly tumultuous dating history, practice abstaining from sex. Refraining from sex for a period of time can be a great way to let emotions surface. Many people bury their scars and traumas running from one relationship to the next, never really allowing themselves the space to heal.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, maybe there is someone you’ve been romantically interested in but you’ve never given it an honest chance. Express your emotions to that someone you’ve had your eye on. Worst case it doesn’t work out. But, at least you will have said what you needed to. This authentic expression of emotions will free up your energy and get your sacral chakra flowing again.
Open yourself with Asanas
Any asana that opens the belly, hips, or midsection is good for the svadhisthana. Poses like Warrior II, Happy Baby, and the Frog Pose are not only great for your hips and groin, but they’ll give you more creative energy and a happier disposition. The deeper you can sit in these postures, the more you’re opening the sacral chakra.
Meditation in general is pretty much always a great idea and has many great benefits. But did you know that you can channel this energy into second chakra healing?
The svadhisthana is the center of creation, which makes sense when you think about its potential to create new life. During your meditations, think about this power your body has. Spend time contemplating the generative ability of your yoni.
In many Hindu cultures, this energy is venerated and worshipped. In fact, every year 100’s of thousands of pilgrims come together to celebrate the Earth’s menstruation in Assam India. They recognize this sacred space as the divine matrix of creation and the field on which all things exist.
Having a relationship like this with this special area of your body is a fantastic way to cultivate the healing process.

Many people may not realize that much of their strife stems from this area of their body. Improper relationships, sexual fixation or impotency, and a lustful or disdaining attitude are all signs of a malfunctioning sacral chakra.
