Feminine embodiment
Embodiment is one of those words that sounds profound and means something very concrete. Can you feel your feet right now, without looking?
Most of us spend the day slightly above the body, running on a stream of thought while the physical self carries us around underneath, reporting only when something hurts or something is urgently required.
Embodiment is the reverse arrangement. Living from inside rather than being transported by. And it is a skill rather than a state, which means it is built through repetition like any other.
Why so many women are not in the body
Ordinary reasons, and most women have several.
A body that has been an object of assessment since adolescence gets experienced from the outside, because attention that is monitoring appearance is not available for sensation. Years of that produce a habit of viewing rather than inhabiting.
Busy lives reward thinking ahead, which is by definition not being here. A day spent three steps in front of yourself is a day spent out of the body.
And bodies that have been through something difficult are bodies it made sense to leave. Distance was protective and it worked, which is precisely why it persists after the need has passed.
None of that is a failing. All of it responds to practice.
What embodiment gives you
The most practical thing is early information.
A woman living in her body notices tiredness before it becomes illness, irritation before it becomes an argument, and the particular tightening that means she is about to agree to something she does not want. Early noticing is what makes a different choice possible at all. Late noticing leaves you explaining afterward.
Then there is sensation, which is not available to a body being observed rather than felt. And underneath both, a quality women describe as being harder to talk out of themselves, which comes from having somewhere to check with that is not an argument.
Arrive, right now
Feel your feet without looking at them. Then your sit bones on the chair. Then the temperature of the air on your hands. Then your low belly, and whether it is soft or held.
Fifteen seconds, four places. Done three times a day, this alone changes more than most week-long courses do.
The daily practice
Small and unremarkable, which is why it works.
Arrive several times a day. The fifteen second scan above, attached to something that already happens. Waiting for a kettle, sitting down at a desk, stopping at a red light.
Breathe below the navel. Three low breaths, wherever you are. Most women breathe high in the chest by default, and low breathing settles the nervous system faster than anything else available. Breathwork for the pelvis covers this properly.
Move without a target. Not exercise with a metric. Stretching because something wants stretching, walking without a destination, dancing badly in a kitchen. The absence of a goal is the active ingredient.
Ask before deciding. Before answering yes to something, take one breath and notice what happened in your chest and belly. The body usually answers before the mind has assembled its reasoning.
Practise deliberately, a few times a week. Twelve minutes with a yoni egg, where the whole task is to feel and report rather than to achieve. This is embodiment training in concentrated form, and it is why the practice transfers into a life so readily.
What tends to change first
Posture, usually, and usually noticed by somebody else before the woman herself. Then sleep. Then the speed at which she answers questions, which slows slightly once there is a body to consult.
Sensation and pleasure come later and they come reliably, but they are rarely the first marker. Women who watch for them and ignore everything else often conclude nothing is happening when a good deal already has.
Why the pelvis specifically
Because it is the region most women are least in.
Embodiment tends to be uneven. A woman may be very present in her hands and entirely absent from her hips. The pelvis is the most commonly vacated part of the female body, for all the reasons above and several more, which makes it both the hardest to inhabit and the place where inhabiting it changes the most.
It also happens to be the ground floor. Presence tends to build from below, which is why root work steadies everything above it.
When the body is not a comfortable place to be
For some women, arriving inside is not neutral, and the first attempts bring more than expected. If that is the case, go shorter rather than deeper. Fifteen seconds, feet only, several times a day. Nothing here rewards pushing.
Starting
Choose one item from the list above. Just one. Keep it for a fortnight before adding anything.
Embodiment is not learned by understanding it, which is the trap this subject sets. Reading three articles about presence is a way of thinking about the body rather than being in it, and the fifteen second scan you did above is worth more than the rest of this page.
