Divine feminine awakening

A phrase that has been used to sell a great many weekends. Underneath the marketing there is something real, and it is slower and more ordinary than the word awakening suggests.

The divine feminine is usually described in terms of qualities: receptivity, intuition, cyclical rather than linear time, creation, feeling, flow. Held alongside a masculine principle of direction, structure and action, with neither belonging exclusively to anybody.

Whether you take that as metaphysics or as a useful way of naming something is not a question this page needs to settle. Either way it points at capacities that are real, that most women have been trained away from, and that can be deliberately rebuilt.

What has usually been trained away

Consider what a woman is rewarded for from a young age. Producing. Anticipating what others need. Being reasonable. Getting things done. Not taking up more space than necessary.

None of that is bad and much of it is genuinely useful. The cost is that the other set of capacities gets very little practice. Receiving without immediately reciprocating. Trusting a feeling that has no argument behind it. Resting without having earned it. Wanting something for no productive reason.

A woman who has spent thirty years in the first mode is not missing something innate. She is out of practice, and that is a considerably more hopeful diagnosis.

Why it begins in the body

Because the capacities in question are not beliefs, and cannot be adopted by deciding to hold them.

Receptivity is a physical state before it is anything else. So is intuition, which arrives as sensation well before it arrives as thought. So is the ability to rest, which a nervous system either can or cannot currently do regardless of what a woman has decided about it.

This is why a twelve minute practice with a stone has more to do with divine feminine awakening than a shelf of books does. It works on the substrate. A woman who can genuinely release her pelvic floor, breathe into her low belly and lie still without producing anything is practising receptivity in the only place it can actually be practised.

Receive one thing

The next time someone gives you a compliment, do not deflect it, qualify it, or return one. Say thank you and stop talking.

Notice how uncomfortable the silence is. That discomfort is the thing, and it is far more informative than any reading on the subject.

How it actually unfolds

Slowly, unevenly, and rarely in the order anyone expects.

What tends to come first is noticing. A woman starts catching herself mid-pattern, in the middle of over-explaining, or of accepting a plan she does not want, or of holding her stomach in. Nothing changes yet. The noticing is the whole first stage and it can last months.

Then small refusals. Declining something she would previously have absorbed. These are usually minor and feel disproportionately difficult.

Then something more like appetite returning. Wanting things, having preferences, being interested. Women often describe this stage as slightly alarming, because a woman with preferences is less convenient than one without and some relationships register the change.

And underneath all of it, a growing willingness to be in the body rather than above it. That is the part feminine embodiment is made of, and it is the daily version of everything on this page.

The part that gets skipped

Almost every account of this focuses on what opens. Very little is said about the ordinary work that makes the opening hold, and that is where most of the actual change happens.

Sleeping enough. Keeping small promises to yourself. Practising on the weeks when nothing is happening. Saying the awkward sentence rather than the smooth one. None of it looks like awakening and all of it is the material the thing is built from, which is why self love as behaviour sits underneath everything here.

What it is not

Not a personality. There is no correct way to be a woman inside this, and a version of the divine feminine that requires flowing clothes and a particular voice has simply swapped one set of expectations for another.

Not an event. The word awakening implies a moment, and the honest description is closer to a long thaw with several false springs.

And not a rejection of anything. A woman who can direct, decide and act is not less awake for it. The aim is having both available rather than trading one for the other.

The pace of it

Years rather than weekends, and the women furthest along are usually the ones who stopped treating it as a destination. What they describe is not arrival but a wider range: still able to push and decide, and now also able to receive, rest and want.

Where to actually start

With the body, and with something small enough to keep.

A regular yoni egg practice, weighted toward release rather than effort. Breath that reaches below the navel. Time that produces nothing. And, if you can find one, other women, since a circle does more for this than solitary reading ever will.
