Womb wisdom and inner listening

Ask a woman where she feels a decision and she will usually point somewhere below the ribs. There is a reason the language is so consistent.

Gut feeling. A sinking feeling. Butterflies. Something in me knew. The vocabulary for intuition is almost entirely located in the torso, across languages that have nothing else in common, and it is worth taking that seriously rather than as a figure of speech.

Womb wisdom is the name given, in the traditions this practice comes from, to the knowing that arrives there. It refers to a way of receiving information rather than to an organ, which is why it remains available to women who no longer have one.

Why the body answers first

Because it is faster and works differently.

The body registers a great deal that never reaches conscious attention. Tone of voice, a hesitation, an incongruity between what someone says and how they say it, patterns from a hundred previous situations. Much of that is processed and responded to before the thinking mind has assembled anything, and the response arrives as sensation.

A tightening. A settling. A sense of the breath going shallow. These are not mystical events, and they are not always right either. They are a rapid summary produced by a system that has been paying attention longer than you have.

The difficulty is that most women have been trained to discount it. A feeling with no argument behind it is not admissible in most of the rooms we are asked to operate in, so we learn to override it, and after enough years of overriding, the signal becomes hard to detect at all.

Ask, and wait

Bring to mind something you are currently deciding. Then, rather than thinking about it, put a hand on your low belly and simply notice what happens there when you consider each option.

Something usually does. It may be very quiet. Noticing it is not the same as obeying it, and noticing is the whole skill.

Why the practice sharpens it

Because it is the same faculty.

A yoni egg practice is twelve minutes of asking a quiet region what is present and listening to the answer without immediately doing something about it. That is precisely the skill inner listening requires, rehearsed in low stakes conditions where nothing depends on the outcome.

Women who practise regularly consistently report noticing their own responses earlier than they used to. Not only in practice, but in conversations, in rooms, in the moment before agreeing to something. The signal did not get louder. The receiver got better.

The awareness exercises in the exercise guide are the relevant ones here, and low breathing matters because a breath that stops at the ribs never reaches the place doing the reporting.

How to consult it

Four steps and they take about a minute.

Be still, and breathe low, twice. Bring the question to mind in a single plain sentence rather than a paragraph of reasoning. Then drop your attention into the low belly and hold the first option there without arguing about it. Notice what happens. Then do the same with the second.

What you are looking for is contraction or expansion. Tightening or opening. It is often extremely subtle and it is rarely dramatic.

Then, and this matters, do not treat the answer as an instruction. Add it to what you know. The body is one source of information and it can be wrong, particularly when it is reacting to something old rather than to what is in front of you. It is a good advisor and a poor dictator.

When nothing comes

Very common, and not a failure.

Sometimes the answer is genuinely not available yet. Sometimes the region has been quiet long enough that the signal needs rebuilding, which practice does over months. And sometimes the question is too tangled to be answered in a single sentence, in which case the work is on the question rather than on the listening.

Do not force it. A woman straining to receive an answer is generating one, and a generated answer is just her own preferences wearing a costume.

Telling it apart from anxiety

The reasonable objection, and worth an answer. Anxiety also lives in the torso and also produces tightening, so how do you know which is speaking?

Two rough markers. Anxiety tends to be loud, urgent and accompanied by a running commentary of scenarios. The quieter signal tends to be steady, and it does not argue with you or escalate when questioned. Anxiety also tends to be about everything at once, while the other is usually about one specific thing.

Neither test is perfect, and settling a nervous system through long exhales before consulting anything is the most reliable way to hear which is which.

Living with it

The change women describe is rarely dramatic guidance. It is a slower way of answering.

A pause before agreeing. Fewer commitments made from momentum. A growing sense of having somewhere to check with that is not an argument, which makes a woman considerably harder to talk out of herself. That is the same ground self love is built on, arrived at from a different direction.
